Life is Precious, made all the more so by its end. A child focused book, this explanation of Death is begun through the inclusion of stories of real life pets which have influenced the author.
Easing into the topic of Death are: Dottie, the Pomeranian; Lady, the Cocker Spaniel; and Bones, the Sheep Dog. Photos taken, at the historic Old Smithville Burying Ground in Southport, NC, provide visual aids to needed discussion with the child audience.
Room has been included, on the pages, for parent / guardians to make notes before reading the material to small children. Adult readers are encouraged to substitute simpler words as may be needed based on the listener’s maturity.
The process, of explaining birth, life, and death to a child, is one of the greatest opportunities for relationship building with the child. An understanding of the life cycle is critical to a child’s development toward a balanced maturity.

It is my hope that in reading this book to a small child, or discussing it with a maturing child- that the process will become a cherished memory honoring the death which caused the need for such loving attention.

People Are Precious was first drafted in 2002 and sent to my former Mother-in- Law in response to the death of one of her sons. Late this summer, while on board our catamaran in Southport, NC I came across both a copy of that draft and my former Mother-in-Law’s thank you note. Her note of thanks was so heartfelt that I decided to expand the material and share it as a published children’s book.
